Permanent Residency Cards (PR Cards) are documents that prove that an immigrant has permanent residency. However, if a PR Card expires, the immigrant’s permanent resident status does not go away.


Some ways in which someone can lose their permanent resident status is for that person to move away from USA for a long time or to commit a crime that violates the permanent residency.


After the happy couple has married, the American citizen spouse will apply for sponsorship of the immigrant spouse. The immigrant spouse will then apply for an immigration visa to USA through one of Canada’s foreign consulates or with the USCIS if already in USA.


Permanent Residency is an important step in this process and must be completed before moving on to getting citizenship.

After a spouse has received permanent residency, they need to meet some other requirements in order to qualify for citizenship.

A spouse cannot have their permanent residency under examination, meaning that they aren’t being investigated for fraud or removal
Spouses have to have been physically within USA for three years within the past four years. This works out to a total of 1,095 days within four years.
Spouses must be reasonably competent in either English or French (official languages of Canada)
They must also be familiar with USA’s history, culture and government.

    TSS Visa (Temporary Skill Shortage Visa)


    The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa program will replace the 457 visa program from March 2018.


    The TSS visa has a short-term stream and a medium-term stream. Applicants with occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL) are eligible for visas of up to two years (renewable once, for a further two years), whilst those on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) can apply for up to four years (with eligibility for permanent residency after three years).



























    Unlike the 457 visa program, some occupations are subject to caveats. For example:



    • Applicant must be paid a higher minimum salary (eg $65,000 or $80,000)




    • Nominated position must not include lower skill tasks




    • Sponsor must be located in a specific postcode




    • Sponsor must have at least five full time employees




    • Sponsor must have an annual turnover of at least $1million


    Employers planning to sponsor workers will need to become an approved ‘standard business sponsor’.
